Abby Stets

Northfield junior Abby Stets has her sights set on helping the Raiders regain the Class 2A girls' gymnastics state championship later this month.

The Raiders were the state runners-up to Roseville last year after winning back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. Stets also plays soccer in the fall and runs track in the spring for the Raiders.

Here is a closer look at Stets:

The best movie you've seen in the last year? "The Dark Knight Rises."

Three songs you never skip on your iPod are ... "Hall of Fame" by the Script; "And We Danced" by Macklemore; "Vienna" by Billy Joel.

Who do you like to follow the most on Twitter, and why? Probably @omgthatspunny. I really enjoy clever puns.

Three words or phrases your friends or teammates might use to describe you? Outgoing, committed, loud.

At your first varsity practice, you felt ... extremely intimidated and nervous about proving why I deserved to be there.

To get focused for an event, you ... dance like a crazy person while eating a clementine. If clementines aren't available, I will gladly resort to an orange.

What did you work on most in the offseason? I play soccer in the summer in hopes of going into the fall season prepared and in shape. I am hoping to play soccer in college, so I am focusing more of my time on it, especially nearing the decision of where I want to go to college.

What are your goals for the remainder of your junior year? My main goal is definitely to win back our state title in gymnastics. Roseville poses excellent competition each year, and we are always neck-and-neck. I'm also hoping to make it back to state in track for the 4x400 relay. We were beat out last year for the second-place spot in the section, so we will be coming back with a lot of motivation this spring.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? My most memorable moment as a high school athlete so far would be going to state in track in the spring of 2012. Our section is full of extremely talented runners, and to have both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays qualify was a huge accomplishment.

How do you balance school and sports during the year? There's no question balancing school and sports is extremely challenging at times. I think the main thing that keeps me focused on school when the sports seasons pick up is knowing that if I succeed in school, it will be one less thing to stress about. Junior year is a hectic year college-wise, and it's easy to become overwhelmed if one part of your life isn't going so well.

In 10 years, you hope you have ... graduated from college and grad school with a degree in nursing.

Do you have a secret talent -- and if so, what is it? I can bend my pointer finger all the way back to my wrist.

What is the best sports advice you've ever received? My soccer coach, Troy Cohrs, wrote me this in a letter before a big game: "All good athletes make mistakes. The great athletes, the ones who attempt to obtain perfection in their game, need to learn from that mistake only one time. It does not need to be repeated."
