Nadia Lorencz
Farmington junior Nadia Lorencz would like nothing more than to qualify for the state meet -- not in one, but two sports.
She currently is competing on the Tigers' gymnastics team. In the spring, it will be off to track and field, her favorite sport.
Here is a closer look at Lorencz:
The best movie I've seen in the last year? "Bridesmaids!" It makes me laugh EVERY TIME!
Three songs I never skip on my iPod are ... Pretty much anything by G-Eazy; "Gotta Have It" by Relo; "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore.
Three words or phrases my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Competitive; funny; outgoing.
How do you balance school and sports during the year? For the most part I have enough time to finish my homework after practice. If I have a really big project that I need to work on, my coaches are very understanding and they'll let me leave practice a little early so that I can finish.
How did you get started in the sports you currently compete in? Growing up I'd go to my friend's house to play. I'd do flips and knock things over just having fun. My friend's mother told my parents to put me in gymnastics. I'm glad they did because I tried it and loved it! As for track, every sport that I've been in the coach has told me that I need to do track, so when I was in ninth grade I decided to try it. I'm so happy that I did because it's so much fun.
At my first varsity practice, I felt ... excited because there were older girls on the team that I looked up to. I wanted to be as good as them, so I decided I was going to work really hard.
What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Last year at sections (for gymnastics) we broke the school record for our team score, which was very exciting. But I'm going to have to say that my overall most memorable moment was at the state track and field meet last year. Five of us made it and we all did very well. We ended up placing fourth as a team. We definitely weren't expecting that.
What were your goals for the 2011-12 season? For gymnastics, we switched sections and I would love to see our team make it to state. If we all work together and have a good meet, we could make school history by making it. As for track and field, I am going to try to beat my school records in both the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles. Also, I think that our team is capable of placing in the top three at the state meet, so I'd love to see that happen.
If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be? I would definitely change the fact that we don't get the chance to compete internationally. I think that most high school students don't really think about what's going on in the world around us. We get so focused on what's going on right around us. I think that competing against different countries would really be eye-opening. People would experience different cultures and meet people that they wouldn't otherwise get the chance to meet.
Do you have a secret talent -- and if so, what is it? Actually, my secret talent is that I can talk in different accents very well. Italian, British, Australian, but my all-time favorite is talking in an Indian accent!
In 10 years, I hope I've ... had a successful collegiate track career. If given the opportunity, I would love to compete in the Olympics in the long jump (I know this is a long shot, but I like to dream big) and then possibly move overseas.
